Neil Whitaker reports
YORKSHIRE Women suffered their second defeat in three days as they went down by four wickets to Surrey Women at Headingley.May 26, 2026 12:07 pm
Seeing the visitors home were Jemma Spence and Alice Monaghan who added 45 in six overs after Surrey had lost four wickets for six runs in two overs. In their chase Surrey set off like a house on fire. Surrey capta Bryony Smith hit their first four balls for fours after a single, Alice Davidson-Richards added another boundary. But Smith was back in the hutch in the next over when she tried to cut a ball from Jess Jonassen which was too close to her and was bowled by the slow left arm spinner Two overs later Kirk Chathli was bowled by Jonassen doing the same as Smith.
Davidson-Richards threatened to see Surrey home within 10 overs until she top edged a sweep off Olivia Thomas to stumper Winfield-Hill. Without adding to the score Paige Schofield was run out for a duck after she hesitated while Laura Harris kept coming. In the next over Harris slapped Jonassen to Sterre Kalis on the long-on boundary.
Ryana MacDonald was another who tried to make room to cut and was bowled, this time the bowler was Holly Garton.
Electing to bat after winning the toss Yorkshire Women made a brisk start adding 60 in their powerplay but after that their innings fell apart only adding another 73 in 13 overs. Doing the damage for Surrey Women were Kalea Moore who took three for 21 in her four overs and McDonald-Gay who took three for 29.
Erin Thomas top scored for Yorkshire with 42. She had a life on 22 when she pulled Chatterji to Harris at deep mid-wicket boundary who caught the ball but as she fell to the ground she dropped the ball. Erin Thomas lofted the next ball over mid-off for a one bounce four. Then she flat batted Moore to the mid-wicket boundary but chipped the next ball to Harris at point.
Moore had to wait until the final over of the Yorkshire innings to take her next two wickets. Ria Frackrell top edged a sweep off Moore and found Danielle Gregory at short fine leg. Rachel Slater moved across her stumps to Moore and patted the last ball of their innings to Schofield.
Yorkshire captain Laureen Winfield-Hill pulled McDonald-Gay to fine leg boundary. She clipped the next ball even finer and deflected the next ball past stumper Chathli. But McDonald-Gay had the last laugh when she bowled Winfield-Hill.
McDonald-Gay got her second wicket when Ami Campbell pulled her to Spence on the square leg boundary. Olivia Thomas tried to work McDonald-Gay to leg and was leg before.
Jonassen tried to muscle Davidson-Richards with a cross batted shot but found Schofield at long-on. Kalis top edged a cut off Davidson-Richards and stumper Chathli took the catch at head height.
Beth Langston clipped Moore to mid-wicket and set off running but was run out trying to complete a second. Maddie Ward reversed swept Gregory to the third man boundary. She took a couple of paces down the pitch to Gregory and lofted her to Smith at mid-off.
The victory was Surrey’s second after they beat Lancashire Women at the Kia Oval on Friday night.
