Yorkshire v Derbyshire T20 Vitality Blast July 13th
DERBYSHIRE Falcons beat Yorkshire by eight wickets with 3.2 overs to spare to end Yorkshire’s faint hopes of reaching the quarter finals.
Put into bat Yorkshire made 151 for nine in their 20 overs and at one time it looked like 100 would be out of their reach when they were 17 for four in five overs. Doing the main damage for the Falcons were Allah Ghazanfa who took two wickets for five runs in his four overs, the joint second best economic figures in four overs for a T20 innings and Ben Aitchison who took 5/29 and found himself on a hattrick.
Yorkshire’s Dom Bess said: “I thought their opening bowler bowled very well, he was quality and I’ve not seen figures like that in a T20 game. We just weren’t in it and we weren’t good enough. If we could have got 170 we might have been in with a chance. With a score like that it’s easy to build pressure and get a wicket to put more pressure on the new batter.
When we were fielding we dropped two catches and I am as guilty as anyone, I dropped a sitter in the first over. It’s disappointing to lose, after winning at Emirates Old Trafford on Friday. We have some quality players. It's just that we’re not consistent. But on Thursday we have a chance of stunting Lancashire’s run to the quarter finals. We don’t want to finish bottom of our group.”
Yorkshire lost their first wicket to the fifth ball of the match. After his century on Friday night Jonny Bairstow was bowled for a duck by Allah Ghazanfa. Allah Ghazanfa got his second wicket when James Wharton drove him but it was the top of his bat and Falcons captain Samit Patel at short cover took a simple catch.
Wil Luxton was the first of Aitchison’s five victims when he sliced a drive off Aitchison to Caleb Jewell at short third man who dove to his right for a simple catch. Yorkshire captain Dawid Malan clipped Aitchison off his legs but got an outside edge and the ball went straight up in the air. Wayne Madsen at short fine-leg waited under it to take the catch.
Jordan Thompson flat batted Zak Chappell straight into the Howard stand for a six and delicately glanced the next ball to the fine leg boundary. The all-rounder added 34 in three overs with Bess before he feathered Aitchison to stumper Nye Donald.
Bess top scored for Yorkshire with 53 and his 50 came from 36 balls with two sixes and four fours. He pulled Pat Brown over square leg into the East stand for Yorkshire’s first six of the matches. Will Sutherland flat batted Patel straight for another six. Bess, reversed swept Patel to the third man boundary. In the next over Sutherland pulled Chappell but the ball went straight up in the air he was resigned to be on his way back to hutch that he set off walking before Russ Whiteley completed the catch.
He clipped Brown off his toes into the East stand for another six. He reached his 50 when he squeezed Brown to the cover boundary. Going for another boundary he pulled Aitchison to Brown on the mid-wicket boundary. Aitchison got on a hattrick when Jafer Chohan got a leading edge to Aitchison and Jewell at point took the catch.
Abdullah Shafiq smashed Patel but found Brown on the deep mid-wicket boundary but he parried it over the boundary. In the next over Abdullah Shafiq pulled Chappell but found Came at mid-who took a tumbling catch.
The Falcons task was made easier by the approach of Donald who knocked the ball around and found the boundary with ease. Donald edged a wideish ball from Milnes to the third man boundary to bring up his 50 from 24 balls with nine fours and a six. In their power play the Falcons scored 71 without loss.
His partner Jewell took a couple of paces down the pitch to Dan Moriarty and launched him over the mid-wicket boundary for a one bounce four and delicately late cut the next ball to the third man boundary.
It was Moriarty who broke the opening partnership when Donald edged a drive and the ball spooned up to Wharton at point. Moriarty got his second wicket in his next over when Came got too far under a pull and Abdulla Shafiq on the mid-wicket boundary took the catch.
Madsen reversed swept Jafer Chohan to the third man boundary. He bottom edged a drive off Thompson that flew over the third man boundary. In the next over he swept Bess to the fine leg boundary and he clipped the next ball to the square leg boundary. He blasted the next ball over the mid-wicket boundary and drilled the next ball to the cover boundary.
He wasn’t finished there; he drilled Thompson straight for his sixth boundary. He finished the match by hitting Jafer Chohan for a six over the long-on boundary.
Aitchison said: “To get two of their best players out quickly in the power play made my job a lot easier when I came back into the attack. Donald has played unbelievable all season.”
