Opener Shikhar Dhawan top scored with 179 as he made Yorkshire pay for dropping him on 10 by Charlie Roebuck in the covers off Oliver Hannon-Dalby in the fourth over of the day.   He went on to share 204 for the first wicket in 44 overs with opening partner Abhina Mukund who made 91.

Mukund was caught at backward square leg by Lee Hodgson off Moin Ashraf. His knock lasted 168 minutes and he faced 118 balls and he hit 12 fours and a six. He hit his six through long on, the ball after he reached his 50 off David Wainwright.  In the afternoon session both openers took a liking to Wainwright as they knocked 44 runs off him.

Dhawan, went on to share in a second wicket partnership of 141 in 26 overs with Ajinkya Rahane.  Dhawan, hit a six through the covers off Hodgson and he also hit 18 off an Hannon-Dalby over, which included an all run four and a huge six over mid wicket.  He lost his wicket when he tried hitting every ball for a boundary and he skied Hodgson to Gary Ballance running in from point.  His knock included 26 fours, two sixes and came from 208 balls in 274 minutes.

The not out batsmen were skipper Cheteshwar Pujara on 55 and Manish Pandey 11.

Yorkshire took the opportunity to give first class debuts to three players: Charlie Roebuck, Alex Lees and 18 year-old stumper Jordan Lowe from Rotherham.  They also only fielded three capped players and they were led by Joe Sayers in the absence of Andrew Gale.

INDIA A drew their opening match of their tour at Headingley Carnegie against Yorkshire.

The match was ruined as a contest on the second day when only 10 overs were possible because of heavy rain in the morning,  India A declared their first innings at their overnight score of 473 for three.  When Yorkshire batted they lost their first wicket in the first over when Joe Root was dismissed for four.   They lost their second wicket two overs later when Gary Ballance was bowled by Dhawal Kulkarni for a duck.

Kulkarni got his third wicket when Charlie Roebuck, making his first class debut, hooked him to Iqbal Abdulla at fine leg for 23.  Captain Joe Sayers was the next to go when he cut Kulkarni to Abdulla at deep point.  His 19 run innings lasted just over two hours.

David Wainwright was trapped leg before to Abdulla for 19 in the first over after lunch without adding to his lunchtime score.  Alex Lees and Lee Hodgson put on 58 for the fifth wicket in 19 overs.  On 38, Lees pulled Kulkarni to square leg and captain Cheteshwar Pujara took the catch running in from mid on.

Hodgson drove Abdulla straight to the substitute at mid on for34, Yorkshire were now 165 for seven.   Jordan Lowe cut Abhinau Mukund straight to Abdulla at point and set off for a quick single.  He was sent back by Tino Best but failed to beat the throw and was run out for five.

Best hit a few lust blows in his 40 but he had one wild swing too many and was bowled by Abdulla.  Moin Ashraf was last man out leg before for five to Abdulla as Yorkshire were dismissed 219.

Abdulla finished with four for 42 and Kulkarni took five for 31 in 20 overs.

20 year old Saurabh Tiwary, who was used as  a substitute in this match received some good news just before the lunch interval on the second day,  he was told he had been called up for the India squad for the Ssia cup. The Jharkhand batsman looked surprised as he received news and thought it was a wind up.  It is Saurabh first call-up f in a 15-man team that is significantly stronger than the side which failed to qualify for the tri-series final in Zimbabwe.

He played for the Mumbai Indians in this year’s IPL where he hit three fifties in their run to the final. That was preceded by a successful domestic season, where, playing for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy Plate League, he scored three centuries in five games at an average of 98.83.

Quite what purpose is fulfilled  for the tourists let alone the spectators by pitching mostly  Yorkshire's 2ndXI against India 'A' is baffling but presumably has a perverse logic in the minds of the Yorkshire committee and ECB Ed!
