Neil Whitaker reports

YORKSHIRE Carnegie moved to second in the North group of the Friends Provident t20 as they beat leaders  Nottinghamshire Outlaws by seven wickets with 10 balls to spare.

The defeat was the Outlaws first in this season’s t20.  Chasing 159 to win the Carnegie hit 19 from Darren Pattinson’s first over but in the next over from Dirk Nannes they lost skipper Andrew Gale for 11 as he was bowled.  Herscelle Gibbs had a let off before he scored when slogged Pattinson but the ball fell short of Alex Hales at mid off.

At the end of their power play the Carnegie had scored 62 for the loss of Gale.  They lost their second wicket in the eighth over when Gibbs stroked Samit Patel straight to skipper David Hussy at cover for 29.  He and Adam  Lyth had added 53 in six overs for the second wicket.  At the end of 10 overs the Carnegie were four runs better off than the Outlaws at the same stage.

Lyth swept Graeme White’s first ball to Hales at the deep mid wicket boundary who took a low catch.  Lyth made 23 from 33 balls with three fours and a six.

Seeing the Carnegie home were Anthony McGrath and stumper Gerard Brophy who added a no fuss 61 in seven overs.  Man of the Match McGrath hit an unbeaten 38 from 30 balls and Brophy, who hit the winning runs made 27.
After winning the toss the Outlaws made 158 for seven in their 20 overs thanks mainly to a third wicket stand of 70 in eight overs between Hales and  Patel.  Hales made 62, his third 50 in this season’s competition, from 41 balls with four fours and three sixes.   He hit Adil Rashid straight and Richard Pyrah appeared to be watching the ball go over the boundary for a six simply stuck out a hand and took a brilliant catch over his left shoulder.  He also hit a big six off Steve Patterson through mid  wicket which landed in the West Stand and in the next over he pulled Best for a six on to the top tier off the North East stand which hit a spectator.
Patel made 41 from 29 balls with five fours and a six.  He was dropped on eight Gale at extra cover off Pyrah on eight.  He was dismissed when he miscued a slog and was caught off McGrath at short third man off Pyrah.
Steven Mullaney made an unbeaten 13 and the only other double figure scorer was David Hussey with 10. The Outlaws lost their first wicket in the second over when Ali Brown lofted Patterson, who nearly always takes a wicket with his first ball and McGrath took the catch at deep mid on. Patterson got his second wicket when Matthew Wood got a leading edge and Gale took the catch at mid off.
