YORKSHIRE Carnegie won their first Friends Provident Twenty20 match of the season with a nine wicket victory over Durham Dynamos.
Putting them on the way to victory was a second wicket partnership of 137 in ten overs between skipper Andrew Gale and Herscelle Gibbs. The partnership was a record for Carnegie for any wicket in the Twenty20. Man of the match Gibbs was 74 not out and he hit seven fours and three sixes. He hit Ian Blackwell’s first ball into the West Stand for a six followed by the second which was a more squarer. He brought his 50 up with a long handed four through the covers off Mitch Claydon. Gibbs hit the winning run with a four of Liam Plunkett.
Gale was 59 not out made from 42 balls and included five fours and three sixes. He hit a huge six into the West Stand off Plunkett and another one into the West stand this time off Will Smith.
Jacques Rudolph was the only Carnegie batsman dismissed when he was bowled by Steve Harmison 13. In fact Harmison responded well to the jeers after his first ball slipped out of the back of his hand.
The Carnegie won the toss and put the Durham Dynamos into bat. The Dynamos made in their 156 for seven in their 20 overs. Albie Morkel top scored with 33 from 23 balls including two fours and two sixes before he lost his off stump to Richard Pyrah. He received support Ben Stokes who made 32. He pulled Adil Rashid and was caught at long on by Anthony McGrath for 32. His knock came from 30 balls and included two fours and a six.
Ross Taylor made 31 in 16 balls before he pulled Pyrah to Jonny Bairstow who had to run in to make the catch. His innings included a six off Clint McKay which was caught in the crowd. He also hit two fours and another two sixes.
They lost their first wicket in their first over when skipper Phillip Mustard played on to Ajmal Shahzad for one. Next to go was Blackwell bowled by Aussie McKay for 11. They reached 156 thanks to an eight wicket partnership of 30 in four overs between former skipper Smith who made an unbeaten 11 and Plunkett who was not out on 21.
