Neil Whitaker reports August 17th

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE beat Warwickshire by an innings and 55 runs with two days remaining to strengthen their position at the top of division one of the LV County Championship as they bowled Warwickshire twice in a day and take 22 points from the match.

In their first innings, Warwickshire lost their last nine wickets for 68 runs in 19 overs as they were dismissed for 121 with extras top scoring with 22.   Doing the damage for Nottinghamshire were  Andre Adams who took four wickets for 14 runs, Paul Franks took three wickets for 15 and Ryan Sidebottom’s three wickets cost him 37.  The visitors found these unplayable as Adams first seven overs were all maidens and he took two wickets.  Franks first six overs were maidens and took two wickets before he conceded a run.  Sidebottom kept beating the bat and didn’t have any luck.

The visitors resumed on Tuesday at 13 for none 315 behind in overcast condition not the ideal to face Sidebottom and Darren Pattinson with any confidence. After the openers Ian Westwood and Varun Chopra played and missed it took Nottinghamshire seven overs to get a breakthrough when Westwood edged Sidebottom to Chris Read for 19.  The visitors had added just 19 to their overnight score.
Darren Maddy was dropped on five by Read diving to his right across Alex Hales at first slip.   The drop wasn’t too costly, because Maddy made only another three before he wafted at Adams and was caught by Hales at first slip. In his next over Adams trapped Jim Troughton leg before for a duck.  Chopra was Adams next victim when he was leg before for 15 and Adams still had to concede a run.  Chopra’s innings of 15 lasted 116 minutes and he faced 89 balls.

In the morning session Warwickshire added 64 runs and lost four wickets in 32 overs, 19 of which were maidens.

Warwickshire lost their fifth wicket in the fourth over after lunch when Rikki Clarke edged Franks to Read for 15.   In his next over Ateeq Javid shouldered arms expecting the ball to swing away but it hit middle and off stumps.   Javid batted 52 minutes for his 15.
Tim Ambrose was the next to go without scoring when he pushed forward at Sidebottom and Adams  took a great catch at third slip diving to his left.  Five balls later Chris Woakes got off the mark when he edged Sidebottom through the slips for four.
Keith Barker opened the face of his bat and gave catching practice to Dave Hussey at second slip.  Adams took a great leaping catch at third slip to get rid of Imran Tahir for one of Franks.  The innings was wrapped up Boyd when Rankin chipped Adams to Sidebottom at mid off who took a one handed catch.

Warwickshire had 13 overs to face before tea which they did without any loss.  But in the fourth over after tea Westwood drove at Adams and got an inside edge and was bowled for 14.  Maddy pulled Adams straight to Matthew Wood at mid wicket for 11 which took him 53 minutes.

Chopra was yorked by Sidebottom and lost his off stump.   He had made 54 from 103 balls, hit eight fours and batted for five minutes over two hours.  That was Chopra’s first fifty since July last year.  Two balls later Clarke played inside the wrong line and was bowled for four.
Troughton hit three fours in his 13 before he fell to a low catch by Read off Sidebottom.  Next over Ambrose was leg before to Sidebottom.  Javid shouldered arms and was bowled by Adams for one.  Barker became Sidebottom’s fifth victim when edged him to Read for 10.

With Warwickshire on 132 for eight, Nottinghamshire claimed the extra half hour.  Imran Tahir cut Franks to Mark Wagh at deep point but he couldn’t hold on to it.  He became the ninth wicket to fall when he was bowled by Franks for 11.  Warwickshire were dismissed for 152 when Woakes was caught spectacularly by Hussey at slip off Franks.

Sidebottom finished with five for 35 his best figures for Nottinghamshire in four years.
