ICC Trophy Toronto 2001
-
Late redefinition of nationality by ICC led to Italy withdrawing and threatening legal action. Frenchman and Americans withdrew but their team continued in the competition. Canadian immigration forced the withdrwal of the West Africa side. The dimwits in the Canadian High Commision in Accra had never heard of West Africa nor the ICC trophy in Toronto. When they did discover it they were worried the Sierre Leonese players would do a bunk- who would want to return to that war torn country? they asked..well perhaps to see one's wife and family....anyway by the time that was sorted out and flights rearranged it was too late for West Africa.
West Africa does have problems. The Dutch refused them entry when the ICC Trophy was held there a decade ago. Nepal had some of its players refused entry by Canadian immigration but they came all the same with substitutes as did UAE and Uganda. The unanswered questions which no one seems willing to ask are why were some cricketers acceptable visitors to Canada and others not especially as amuch larger number of athletes and countries attended the Edmonton World Athletics event. The last question is of considerable importance namely did the visa refusals effect the result. Well UAE and Uganda were effected and that certainly may have changed the result. Canada and UAE finished equal on points! So 22 nations lined up in 4 divisions. The league produced three top countries Holland, Nambia and Scotland. The rest is history as they say. The play off for third place resulted in Canada still 2 points behind Scotland after that match 'leap frogging' them into the World Cup Bob Woolmer is now in charge of the accelerating the development of the ICC Trophy winners plus Kenya but not Scotland of course!.

Andrew Eade confirms ICC's desperate attempt to bridge gap between amateur cricketers at Senior Associates and the professional cricketers of Test countries. Actually most people consider several Associates with their best team better than Bangladesh who could probably do with the same sort of ICC investment themselves to save embarassment at the next World Cup.

Scots gripe at ICC

Scots felt the format let them down. After all they were third already. Why the extra match when they were 4 points ahead of Canada?. Them rules, is them rules!

Superleague and four preliminary divisions. The winners of second division a and b played the fourth in first division a and b. Namibia beat Bermuda but Uganda lost to UAE. Namibia then inherited Bermuda's record against superleague opponents in the first division. Got it? Well done!
