Day 1
BAD light ended play early on day one of this LV County Championship match between Yorkshire and Kent with Yorkshire reaching 205 for seven as they try to overtake both Nottinghamshire and Somerset to claim their first County Championship since 2001
On an overcast morning Kent skipper Robert Key won the toss and decided to field in this vital LV County Championship match at Headingley Carnegie. Play started late because of light morning rain and the visitors got a breakthrough in the ninth over when Simon Cook slanted one across at Adam Lyth who pushed at it and was caught by James Tredwll at first slip moving across to his left for 17 with the score on 30.
In the next over Anthony McGrath flashed at wide one from Matt Coles and was caught by Martin Van Jaarsveld at second slip for one. Tykes’ captain Andrew Gale and Jacques Rudolph, who could be playing his last match for Yorkshire, added 50 for the third wicket in 17 overs before Gale fell leg before to Derwald Nel for 39 in the last over before lunch.
The Tykes lost their next wicket in the fifth over after lunch interval when Rudolph pushed forward at Nel and was comprehensively bowled for 25. Gerard Brophy tried to drive Coles but he dragged on and was bowled for one.
There were three interruptions in the afternoon session for rain and an early tea was taken. In the second over after tea, Adil Rashid drove at Nel and was caught behind by Geraint Jones for 29. Rashid and Jonny Bairstow had put on 65 in 13 overs.
Bairstow pulled Coles behind square to bring up his eighth Championship fifty of the season from 81 balls with nine fours. The Tykes got their first batting point when Ajmal Shahzad whipped Nel off his legs through mid wicket, the next ball Nel had his revenge when Shahzad tried to repeat the shot and was leg before for 21 from 39 balls with four fours.
Yorkshire added another five runs before the umpires took the players off and in total 38 overs were lost in the day. After the days play Bairstow said: “It’s disappointing not to get full days play but it was good to get some play in. Hopefully we can build up a good score. The pitch was fine, it’s a good pitch and the players feel we can get a good total on it. I don’t know what’s go on in the other games I just concentrate on this game. I am just working hard at my game.”
DAY 2
KENT’s Martin Van Jaarsveld hit 89 and passed 1000 championship runs for the season during his knock as Kent finished the second day on 216 for six 45 behind Yorkshire.
He hoisted Ajmal Shahzad into the East Stand for an huge six and he brought up his half century with another six into the East stand this time off Adil Rashid. That was the shot that brought up his 1000th Championship run of the season. On 77 he gave a chance when he was dropped by Andrew Gale at backward point.
Replying to Yorkshire’s first innings total of 261, opener Joe Denly was dropped on 15 by Jonny Bairstow at second slip of Shahzad. He made another 11 when he steered a short one from Oliver Hannon-Dalby to Rashid at third slip, with Kent on 44. In the next over his opening partner Sam Northeast drove at Shahzad and Gerard Brophy took a great catch low down diving to his right.
Kent skipper Rob Key was joined by Van Jaarsveld and they put on 83 in 18 overs. The partnership was broken three balls after Rashid was hit into the East Stand when he trapped Key leg before with a googly for 25.
In the next over Darren Stevens was leg before first ball to Moin Ashraf for a duck. Stumper Geraint Jones was the next to go yorked by Moin Ashraf for six. Kent had gone from 129 for two 142 for five in seven overs.
Van Jaarsveld and Alex Blake added 68 for the sixth wicket in 18 overs but when Van Jaarsveld was given out leg before when he drove at Moin Ashraf he didn’t look pleased. He batted for 153 minutes, faced 128 balls and he hit two sixes and seven fours.
A quick shower drove the players off the field with two overs left with Blake 40 not out.
Play didn’t start on the second until after lunch because of rain and 16 overs were lost. Yorkshire lost their first wicket of the day when Bairstow tried to cut Dewald Nel but it was too close to him and he was caught at second slip by Van Jaarsveld for 64. Bairstow hit 10 fours in his 64 which came off 105 balls.
In his next over Nel got one to come back at Hannon-Dalby and he was trapped leg before for one. Nel should have got his seventh wicket but Denly dropped Moin Ashraf at mid off when on 0 and Yorkshire were on 227. 23 runs later Moin Ashraf was dropped again, this time by Van Jaarsveld at second slip off Simon Cook. To be fair to Van Jaarsveld it was a difficult one handed chance leaping to his right. Moin Ashraf was the last man out when he was leg before James Tredwell’s third ball for 10. With Steve Patterson they added 62 in 13 overs for the tenth wicket. Patterson was unbeaten on a season’s best score of 39 and Yorkshire were all out 261 but they collected two batting points.
For Kent Nel took a career best six for 62 in his first Championship match of the season, the best figures by a bowler against Yorkshire this season.
