Click to edit this item. Day four
A flurry of fours by Stewart gave no hint of what was to come.Rather tamely England's batsmen succumbed to the Aussie quicks finely passing the tourists total but asking them to score 14 to win.

Caddick and gough claimed a wicket each before the inevitable victory was secured before 80 minutes play were completed.
Poor value for those £50 tickets.
Ultimately ECB is in the entertainment business. When such finishes result there should the guarantee of some cricket to watch however exhibition.

England have serious problems and few answers.the recall of Tufnell would give their bowling more potency and the blooding of some youngsters would at least be some investment in the future.

Three more matches of this ilk with do little for cricket present or future.

Day three

England's fielding let them down in the morning allowing Gilchrist to race away to a fine ninety and give Australia a useful lead.

When England batted Trescothick soom went and nether Atherton nor Thorpe played the innings required of them if England were to contest this match.

It was left to Butcher to challenge the tourists and he remains not out overnight with Steawrt with him. For once ramprakash broke out of the twenties iina Test at Lord's giving Butcher some support in a 4th wicket stand of 96.As a result Sunday's full house has some hope of some cricket to watch.

England remain some 50 runs behind and baring bad weather or miracles have lost this Test.

The debate already is waht do the selectors do next?
Day two
Surprisingly fine weather greeted Lord's on Friday morning and against forecast it remained dry all day. any hopes of England posting a substantial score soon disappeared when Stewart departed for a duck and not long after Thorpe uncharacteristically fenced at a wide short one from McGrath.
A short cameo innings from Cork in partnership with Ward raised English supporters hopes for a while but he fell on 24 and the tail did not wag leaving Ward not out on 23.

England had to take quick wickets and a rampnat Caddick threatened to do just that removing Hayden in his first over. when gough got one to rear up at Ponting Australia were 27-2.

Mark Waugh and a subdued slater then biult a partnership of nearly 80 runs before slater hooked widly at a first ball bouncer from Caddick returning from the Pavilion end.
Slater later went to hospital for an Xray on his hand which may explain his dour innings.

Mark Waugh batted with supreme confidence timing to perfection and reached a well desrved century for the first time at Lord's. Just when most people were sttling back in their seats expecting an evening 's exhibition of brilliant batting he ran himself out via a good throw from Gough at mid on. his brother followed shortly after but gilchrist and Martyn batted until the close in some comfort.

Aside from the fire of Caddick and Gough the rest of the England bowling did not look threatening and had a sameness about it. a spinner would be good news but the only one in this team is Mark Ramprakash and he not bowled a ball outside of the nets this season.
Day one
On the first day overnight the weather was wet with some very heavy showers. the morning has seen drizzle but despite complete cloud cover the atmosphere has been dry for some time and play briefly started around 1230.
It then became a very frustrating day for spectators, players and groundstaff with severals breaks for light and drizzle.Trescothick was caaught off a dreadful waft off what should have been a no ball. Butcher batted confidently before edging to slip fencing at a short ball along way from his body.
Mike Atherton had been batting very well driving and once hooking several criap boundaries before he was adjudged lbw to a rising McGrath delivery which haweye said would have passed over the stumps.
Enter Ramps to join Thorpe. Once again we witnessed the former Middlesex player all cramped up in defensive mode. His switch to ?surrey may have added to the fluency of the run machine in county Cricket but back in Test cricket Ramps was at again. He hit three threes and ran fast between the wickets with Thorpe but then all crouch up he shuffled across and was bowled. Deja vue!
Thorpe had been batting neatly not only nudling the ones and twos but including some straight drives and a fine controlled hook.
Just as Stwart arrived athe crease to join thorpe so the final break for bad light came around 7.00pm.
England are in a precarious position and must look to Thorpe, Stewart and Ward to put some substance into this innings.
There has been considerable sideways movement off the seam as well a couple of extraordinary turning balls from Warne so england's bowlers should get some help when they bowl at Australia. In the meantime weather permitting England must put some runs on the board.
Amidst this gloomy weather came the Queen to Lord's having first dined with President Bush. She met the teams etc but also the TMS team including 'Aggers ' dressed in an extraordinary scruffy shirt with vast collar and shaving blood stain. Perhaps he curtseyed.!

Click to edit this item. Steve Waugh brimming with Confidence

Steve Waugh and Adam Gilchrist at the press conference at Lord's, July 18th, were confident of Australia maintaining their winning ways. Both thought the last game closer than the press had reported it but that Australia had seized their chances in general while England let slip theirs.
Both players expressed surprise that some players turned down the England captaincy and wondered whether this indicated a lack of morale.
Michael Atherton said he could not speak for others but having thought the situation through he had decided if asked that he would accept the captaincy and was proud to be doinf so again. He felt that England with thorpe and ramprakash fit would be a stronger batting side.
The weather on Wednesday was varied with a lot of heavy showers yet both skippers declared the test pitch to look a little dry.
