Neil Whitaker Reports
THE Leicestershire Foxes gained revenge for last Sunday’s defeat as they beat Yorkshire Carnegie by six runs as the match went to last ball. The Foxes made 175 for four in their 20 overs which at one stage they did’nt look like getting. Their score was possible thanks to a fifth wicket stand of 81 in seven overs between James Taylor and Wayne White. Taylor hit an unbeaten 62 from 28 balls; his highest score so far this season in the Friends Provident t20, while White was not out on 23. When the Foxes turned the heat on the Carnegie, Taylor hit a six over fine leg off Ajmal Shahzad and in the next over he reversed slogged Steve Patterson for a four through third man. In the same over he hit Patterson for a monster six over fine leg. The next ball went for a six through mid wicket. In the last over he hit a straight six off Richard Pyrah which landed on one of the dug outs. In their power play the Foxes only scored 43 without loss. They lost their fist wicket in the ninth over when Brad Hodge was caught by Adam Lyth on the long off boundary off Adil Rashid for 18. Lyth caught the ball but as he was going to step over the boundary he threw the ball back into play and caught it. Will Jefferson was leg before to Rashid for 19, the ball after he had flat batted Rashid for a six through the covers. James Benning became Rashid’s third victum when the leg spinner yorked him for 41. Paul Nixon, suffered the same fate four balls later. Rashid finished with four for 20 from his four overs. The Carnegie lost their first wicket in the second over when Lyth was caught in the covers by White off Nathan Buck for four. Five balls later, Herschelle Gibbs tried to pull buck across the line and top edged it and Nixon took the catch. In his next over Buck got one to cut back at Anthony McGrath who was lbw for five. Buck finished with three for 20 in his four overs. Skipper Andrew Gale and Jacques Rudolph put on 53 in seven overs before Rudolph was leg before to Benning for 21. Gale was then run out after Jonny Bairstow pushed the ball out to White at mid on but the Carnegie skipper thought that Claude Henderson had knocked the bails before he had the ball. From their last five overs the Carnegie needed 59 more to win with five wickets remaining. Bairstow was dropped on 32 by White at long on off Henderson but to be fair to White it was a difficult chance. Bairstow then reversed swept Josh Cobb for four. The next ball he hit straight to Hodge at mid wicket. Bairstow had made 40 from with four fours and two sixes. Shahzad hit the next two balls for sixes, he hit the next ball to Taylor at long on. From the last over the Carnegie needed 19 to win which was bowled by former Carnegie player Matthew Hoggard. From the first ball they got two. The next ball Pyrah hit a six. The next went for two. Pyrah got a single off the fourth ball. Rashid got the fifth ball away for a single. Six was needed off the last ball for a tie. Pyrah, trying to hit the six was caught by Benning at long on for 14.
