Trevor Philpot explains the art of leg spin to ACC coaches at a Lilleshall Coaches Conference

Coaching
Cricket coaching has undergone a revolution in the last two decades throughout the cricket world. Coaching education and qualification have been formalised and all major cricket countries have an integrated coaches set up under the auspices of the governing body.

There has been a trend towards specialist cricket academies and specialist rather than all purpose coaches. Thus Test teams will have a bowling, a batting and a fielding coach.

Nevertheless there remains the belief that UK cricketers are over coached and often moulded to a perceived correct model rather than honing natural ability and a passion for the game.

In UK the Association of Cricket Coaches-ACC has been the dominent organisation though there have been rival and splinter groups. ACC seems to have bedded down now with ECB after a tortuous process and works with the National coaching structure under Hugh Morris. ACC has a conference each year at Lilleshall in late February where apart from a dawn cricket match on the icy hockey pitch on Sunday for the sturdier attendees and some serious late night inbibing over endless talk of cricket does get through an important programme of lectures, seminars, demonstrations and much coaching education.

Our picture here by Roger Wootton shows Trevor Philpott, the acclaimed wrist spin expert, explaining the art to ACC Coaches.
