Despite the heroics of Caddick and Stewart on day one and the enterprising stand by Atherton and Butcher at the start of the test england were completely outgunned in this opening Ashes Series match. Worse the captain is injured and several others missing from this line up will not mend in time for the second test match at Lord's.
In the months before this series much emphasis was given to England's seam attack and the problems it would set the australian batsmen as they tried to dominate proceedings. Well Brave Gough went for 5 runs an over over 33 bowled and Andy Caddick for a similar figure. White and giles ar 4 runs per over. The only bowler to emerge with merit was the part forgotten Mark Butcher. He, too, went for nearly 5 runs an over but took 4 late wickets.

Butcher always was a very fine bowler throughout his development through youth cricket yet it something only remembered in test matches when a skipper is desperately looking around for someone to bowl. So much for County Cricket and its £30 million drain on ECB's resources!.

So great is the gulf between these sides that it is difficult to see how England can regroup, restore spirits and surprise these tourists.

It is a tragedy that Thorpe is unfit, unfortunate that Vaughan is unwell while White and Giles are not 100 % match fit. Now Hussain is once more side lined there must be despondency in the England camp at the gaps in the first team but also in the sparcity of talent pressing to fill vacant places.

Quite clearly there is not the necessary substance in the batting and there is certainly not the depth and variety in the bowling to stretch such a long line of talented batsmen.

England fans may hope even dream but it looks most unlikely that Australia will stumble to defeat as in India.

England named a 14-man squad for this week's 1st npower Test Match against Australia at Edgbaston. (July 5-9) but soon had to make a series of changes. Thorpe's calf is still not mended which indicates a much more serious injury than peviously thought or a certain amout of
complacency/negligence concerning the injury. In addition to Thorpe Vaughan is not concerned fit having a suspected torn cartiledge in his left knee and will soon have an arthrospic operation confirmed England Physio Dean Conway.

Ashley Giles is now the victim of a virus and has swollen tonsils to add to his achilles tendon. In the meantime Mark Ramprakash has withdrawn because of a hamstring difficulty.

Surrey's Mark Ramprakash was included in the squad as cover for Graham Thorpe whose place is in serious doubt due to a strained right calf, now both are out.

Ashley Giles and Craig White, who missed the two-match npower Test series against Pakistan through injury, both return to the squad together with captain Nasser Hussain who missed the Old Trafford Test with a broken thumbbut Giles is doubtful and Robert Croft is on standby.

Chairman of Selectors, David Graveney, said: "We currently have injury concerns about three players, Michael Vaughan, Ashley Giles and Graham Thorpe. Graham is the most serious concern at present and we will need to check the fitness of all three players at Edgbaston. His worse fears were confirmed and more.

The selectors did consider the worst case scenario in relation to injuries but decided to call up only one extra player as cover at that stage.

England physiotherapist, Dean Conway said: "Graham Thorpe saw a second specialist in London yesterday regarding his calf injury and we are currently awaiting the results of tests. He continues to experience tightness in the calf while running and turning. While he has not been ruled out of the Test, at this stage he remains a serious doubt." ECB Selectors may have been wiser to select on a worst case scenario.

"Michael Vaughan had an injection in a damaged cyst in his left knee earlier this week and Ashley Giles has reported stiffness and soreness in his achilles after a lengthy bowling spell for Warwickshire last weekend, added Dean Conway

Original England Squad: Nasser Hussain (Captain), Michael Atherton (Lancashire), Andrew Caddick (Somerset), Dominic Cork (Derbyshire), Ashley Giles (Warwickshire), Darren Gough (Yorkshire), Matthew Hoggard (Yorkshire), Mark Ramprakash (Surrey), Alec Stewart (Surrey), Marcus Trescothick (Somerset), Graham Thorpe (Surrey), Michael Vaughan (Yorkshire), Ian Ward (Surrey), Craig White (Yorkshire).

ECB have now called up three players to bolster the injury jinxed England squad: Mark Butcher (Surrey), Robert Croft ( Glamorgan ) and uncapped Usman Afzaal ( Notts).

Damien Martyn has been preferred to Justin Langer in the Australian team for the First Test at Edgbaston on Thursday.

Martyn is expected to bat at six with Ricky Ponting moving up to three.

Australian Squad: ML Hayden, MJ Slater, RT Ponting, ME Waugh, SR Waugh (capt), DR Martyn, AC Gilchrist (wkt), SK Warne,
B Lee, JN Gillespie, GD McGrath.
